The region referred to as the Deep South is largely the Hambanthota district which is located in the extreme southern part of the island. This is a coastal expanse of land that stretches from the Tangalle beach to the Kumana Bird Sanctuary. A veritable dry zone, the region is the centre of Sri Lanka's salt production and also features several of Sri Lanka's most popular wildlife and bird sanctuaries.
